Kharar, November 14

The Kharar Municipal Council today gave another five days (till November 20) to local traders to dispose of their polythene stocks. After this, those found storing, using and selling poly bags will be challaned and proceeded against from November 30 onwards.

Earlier, the civic body had decided in its last House meeting to enforce a complete ban on storage, usage and sale of polythene bags in Kharar from November 15.

Today, a delegation of the local traders met MC president Anju Chander and executive officer Sandeep Tiwari and sought some more time to clear poly bag stocks in their possession.

In the meeting, the MC sought cooperation from shopkeepers to make the ban on polybag successful to check pollution in the township. MC officials told the traders that polythene bags were blocking underground sewerage lines and drains in the township, which was costing the civic body dear.

Traders said the problem was not with the usage of polythene bags, but it was about the manner in which these were disposed of. They demanded that people of Kharar should be made aware of proper disposal of polybags and the traders should be given an alternative to polybags for their day-to-day business.

It was decided in today’s meeting that teams of the MC will check the stock of traders and start challaning the violators from November 30 onwards.
